Appendix A - Geological Heritage Project, St Andrews and East Fife

Introduction

The year 2003 will be the Centenary of the formation of the Department of Geology at St Andrews University and the appointment of its first Lecturer, Thomas Jehu, who went on to become Regius Professor of Geology at Edinburgh University.

Geology had been taught at St Andrews for many years prior to this under the umbrella of Natural History, and the excellent natural rock formations found in the vicinity augmented its study. St Andrews has played host to many illustrious men who, in one way or another, contributed to the science of Geology.

The formal adoption of Geology in 1903 as a distinct discipline by the University came shortly after Sir Archibald Geikie, working in Fife for the Geological Survey, made his famous comment that

"if I were to choose an area of Scotland where geology could best be taught with reference to evidence in the field, I would, without hesitation, choose East Fife".

Objective

It is my desire to see the Centenary marked in some tangible way which may remain as a testimony to the scholarship and endeavours of these men.

The projects which I propose would help to increase the public's awareness of the importance of geology in everyday life and encourage schoolchildren to appreciate their local geological heritage.

Five projects are proposed

* These projects have planning implications.

Descriptive leaflet:

Sketch of Geological Wall R. A. Batchelor 1999
Sketch of Geological Wall R. A. Batchelor 1999

A photograph of the wall with the special rocks identified in a key. Each rock incorporated into the wall will have its own description, thus:

Rock1

  1. Sketch of the actual specimen highlighting important features
  2. Description of the rock
  3. Explanation of its mode and environment of formation
  4. Source locality of rock and extent of the outcrop in Fife
  5. Industrial uses for the rock

A quiz will invite the observer to think about why certain rocks are good for certain uses, eg. building; road stone; cement. Also why some rocks contain fossils and others don't.
